DonYil Livingston is not just a boxer who knows how to be successful in the boxing ring; he also shows how to be successful in life. This young boxer, who's best known as "The Boxing Poet," has been boxing for 10 years. Knowing that it has definitely been a blessing to accomplish so much as an amateur, DonYil is yet humble and has the willing desire and mind power to learn and conquer the sport. With amazing speed and foot movement, he isn't just looking to use his ability to dominate the amateur boxing world, DonYil is looking forward to carrying it into his professional career after the 2004 Olympic Games.

Livingston began boxing in August 1995. Since then, he has accomplished many goals that he has set for himself, both in- and outside of the ring. DonYil currently attends California State Northridge, where he's pursuing a degree to become a Biochemist and, besides this blood battling sport of boxing, DonYil writes poems during his spare time.

He comes from a big supportive family of 10 and, with four older brothers and one older sister, DonYil happens to be the middle child. Following DonYil is his twin brother DonTril, their younger brother and two younger sisters. With great support from his girlfriend, Jennifer, and a strong push from his family, DonYil can't help but to be successful!

At the age of 10, six months after he began boxing, DonYil captured his first National Silver Gloves Championship. That special victory helped to motivate this talented young man; it made him hungrier for more. In May of 1996, he captured the National Junior Golden Gloves Championship where for the next five years he continued to uphold the title. DonYil, boxing at 165lbs., is currently ranked number 3 in the Nation.

As a boxer, he appears to be hard on the outside, however, DonYil happens to be a very touching person on the inside. For example, all of his poems aren't just about boxing; some of them show his emotional side. Below, you can view some of DonYil "The Boxing Poet" Livingston's work.

This Sport of Boxing
Is this sport of boxing as dangerous as many making it out to be? Or is this sport of boxing helpful to those that's willing to achieve. Facing the sport like it's a chess game. Using your jab as a pond, setting up the king to be captured with awe. Many gets confuse with the sport and ask, " Why do you do it?" This sport of boxing is like the life we live today. Everyday we have to over come an obstacle, but what do we use, our mind. When you step into that ring, you only want one thing, but still you have that opponent, that obstacle. You must use your mind. I'm not on the street running in and out of store. Messing up in school cause I can't find any open doors. I have a positive life in this sport of boxing. Now let me ask you, why do you do what you do? Now stop looking at all what if and look at the what now and tell me, why do I do this sport of boxing?

Black
Black, what is black? Black is the color of love, the color of peace, it can love more than one person, it can love you followed up by me. Black is love, black is unique, black is power especially if you ask me. We can't run for president but can't you see, the white man has tricked us, we're not really free. Tied down with chains, being called out of our names, all this madness was very insane. Beaten with whips, killed by guns, they took us out one by one. Working from sun raise to sun fall, most of our ancestors been through it all. In the fields working hard, picking cotton by the yard. When I raise my head, yea you see a tear, but trust me in my blood I have no fear. I'm on a mission to get things right and I'm not stepping down, I'm going to continue to fight. Black

DEEP BREATH
NOW I'M RELAXED, I CAN SIT HERE AND TELL YOU WHAT'S ON MY MIND, WHAT'S BEEN SHAKING MY BRAIN SO HARD, TILL IT SENDS A GREAT CHILL DOWN MY SPINE. ASKING MY SELF, IS THIS THE POSITION THAT I WANT TO BE IN, OR DO I HAVE OTHER CHOICES? SEE IT'S ONE THING TO BE IN LOVE, WHERE YOU EXPECT GREAT DEALS OF HAPPINESS, NOT REALLY LOOKING FOR CONFLICT, BUT TAKING IT ON WITH THE MIND SET, "BABY, WE'RE GOING TO GET THROUGH THIS". TRYING TO JUGGLE SO MANY PROBLEMS AT ONE TIME, AND EVERY TIME YOU LET ONE DROP, WHEN YOU PICK IT BACK UP IT SEEMS HEAVIER. NOW WHAT DO WE DO? DEEP BREATH- LETTING OUT GREAT BREATHS OF FRUSTRATION, BUT HOW DO YOU GET FRUSTRATED WITH SOME ONE YOU LOVE? WELL MAYBE YO'RE NOT IN LOVE, MAYBE YOU WANT TO BE, BUT YOU'RE NOT CONFIDENT WITH YOUR PARTNERS FEELINGS NOW MY LOVE IS CONFUSED, WHAT DO I DO, WHAT DO I DO? AS THE BEATING OF MY HEART PICKS UP, I TAKE A DEEP BREATH, TRYING TO SLOW THE BEATING DOWN BEFORE MY HEART REGRETS THE FEELING OF LOVE. BUT SEE, I REALLY DON'T HAVE THAT PROBLEM, BECAUSE IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT MY LOVE, IT'S ABOUT OUR LOVE. AND WE'RE HAPPY.
